Animal rights activists are the only people that make the LGBT Gaystapo look reasonable. A person or group (it’s hard to tell) has launched a Facebook campaign to have the heavy metal group Metallica banned from playing a Glastonbury England music festival because front man James Hetfield is a supporter of big game hunting.
At issue is Hetfield’s involvement with a History Channel documentary series called The Hunt. Metallica’s main man will narrate the 8-episode series that focuses on bear hunting in Alaska. Hetfield is a member of the NRA (good for him) and an avid hunter that travels the world on hunting expeditions.
The ban Metallica FB page announces itself like this: “This page is an appeal to Glastonbury to remove METALLICA from their lineup. We believe James Hetfield’s support of big-game hunting is incompatible with the spirit of Glastonbury and brings its good name into disrepute.”
In a separate posting the anonymously brave page administrator wrote:
I doubt very much that James Hetfield is the first high-profile big-game hunter to grace the stages — I’m sure there have been many. I do, however, doubt that any of them have had a prime time History show promoting his view that hunting is a good thing to do, on at the same time. This double exposure gives his views extra publicity and acceptability, and this is where we can have an effect… This is about raising awareness and making both METALLICA and Glastonbury aware of what appears to be a large number of people’s disapproval.
As of this writing, over 16,000 kooks, PETA members, and people who have nothing better to do have liked this page. Some of the comments call bear hunting “murder” and those who do it “spineless killers.”
This isn’t just a whiney bitch-fest, a petition has been set up to help force the concert organizers into kicking Metallica off of the bill. Unfortunately, while 16,000 loonies like the idea, less 3000 of them are willing to spend 10 seconds of their time to sign the petition.
I think most of you reading this will agree that this hysterical reaction is both overblown and uninformed. Hunting is a vital component in species management. Without it, animal populations would explode and the eco system would be thrown into chaos. Instead of dying quick painless deaths, animals would starve and suffer. Also, the fees collected from licenses pays for the upkeep of natural lands and preserves.
But don’t take my word for it, here’s a little something from the press release for The Hunt:
Brown bear co-existence with humans on the island is a delicate balance, yet is regarded as one of the most successful conservation efforts in the world. Most hunters go after adult males, or boars, who when food is scarce are known to kill and eat cubs, as well as cause trouble near populated areas.
Here’s a thought for the FB administrator and the throngs of mindless supporters: If you don’t like Metallica or something that one of its members does, don’t pay to go see them. Don’t buy their albums. Don’t wear their t-shirts. It’s pretty simple. Not everything has to be a huge “crisis” and you don’t have to push your personal views on the world.
For me, I’m a huge Metallica fan and have been supporting them since I was a teenager. Now that I know James Hetfield is a member of the NRA and a hunter, I’m going to support them even more by blasting Master of Puppets while I grill up some bear burgers. That is, if I can find bear meat in suburban Los Angeles. For sure I will be watching The Hunt which premiers on Sunday June 8.
