Immediately following Donald Trump’s upset win over Hillary Clinton in the presidential election liberals blamed racist white people. Since then, they have blamed fake news, voter fraud, Russian hacking, and an unfair Electoral College system, but with all of those excuses for Hillary’s epic failure falling flat they are coming back around to racism. Not that I actually expect a reasonable answer from the left, but why is it racist for white people to vote for Trump and empowering when black people voted for Obama?
On Salon today there was and article titled: It was the racism, stupid: White working-class “economic anxiety” is a zombie idea that needs to die
It’s a very long and boring article, but the basic argument is that since white people from all different economic backgrounds voted for Trump, they must have done it because they are racists. The point of making this inflammatory accusation is that the author is sick of people saying that Rust-belt swing voters elected Trump for economic reasons. It can only be racism for anyone who writes for Salon.
The first and most glaring problem is that Trump was running against another white person. Hillary Clinton is most definitely white. Maybe if Salon was trying to make a case for sexism, because Hillary is apparently a woman, they’d have a leg to stand on, but picking one white person over another white person is not racism, even in the altered reality of Liberal Land.
Both in 2008 and 2012 Obama, who is half-black, ran against entirely white opponents. For the 2008 election 95% of blacks voted for Obama over John “Whitey” McCain and in the 2012 election 93% of blacks voted for Obama over Mitt “Super-Honky” Romney. In both of those elections, roughly half of white people voted for Obama.
Now let’s get real here, black people voted for Obama because he is black. They didn’t vote for him because he had a record of being a good leader as he had no record at all. He went from the obscurity of a do-nothing Illinois State senator to the White House in just a few short years. He never had a real job in his life before he assumed office. Obama was never a national figure, a military leader, or an accomplished businessman. He was just somebody who his own wife called a bum.
Obama also never ran on anything more substantial than “hope and change.” He didn’t have a solid platform and proposed no specific policies. In 2008 he was the guy who wasn’t a continuation of George W. Bush’s presidency and in 2012 he was the guy who didn’t wear magic underwear.
If blacks didn’t support Obama for his record or ideas, the only logical conclusion is that they backed him for his skin color. Why was that okay in the previous two elections, but now that Trump was elected it’s racist for people to vote for someone who is similar racially?
Missing from this ridiculous argument is the fact that people voted for Trump for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with race. I’m white and I voted for Trump because I’m a registered Republican and he was the Republican candidate. More specifically, Trump was not a liberal progressive democrat who wants to take away my gun ownership rights. Not that I think I would ever vote for a democrat, but the main point of my vote for Trump was because the next president gets to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat and decide whether the court is a liberal anti-gun bench or a conservative pro-2nd Amendment panel.
Since I doubt any liberals are going to answer the question of my headline, I’ll go ahead and do it for them. The reason why liberals think it was empowering when blacks voted for Obama and racist when whites voted for Trump is because they believe nothing black people do is racist while everything that white people do is racist. The reality is Trump was elected because America is sick of that kind of liberal bullshit.
