On Friday, police say a lone gunman opened fire at the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., international airport. The shooting rampage killed five people and sent others to the hospital.
The horrific attack took place at a quiet baggage claim area, and sent people running throughout the terminals at one of the country’s busiest airports. All flights were shut down as federal and local law enforcement, and paramedics rushed to the scene.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the suspected shooter is in custody and apparently, acted alone. In addition to those killed, eight were taken to area hospitals. Police have not yet commented on their conditions. Israel said:
Right now, this scene is considered fluid and active.
The incident took place just before 1 p.m. Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting. Israel added:
He’s unharmed. No law enforcement fired any shots.
The shooter was identified as Esteban Santiago. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) was told the shooter carried a military ID. The shooting took place in the baggage claim at the airport’s Terminal 2, home to departures and arrivals for Delta and Air Canada.
