Back in July, the LGBT community of Washington DC was outraged when a bartender from a gay bar was attacked and hospitalized with a broken neck. Clearly this was the result of some hateful anti-gay bigot, right? Not so fast. It turns out this bartender is just really clumsy or full of shit. Actually it could be both. After an extensive hate crime investigation, the police have determined this man tripped and fell, causing his own injuries.
The DCist reports that on July 15 man identified only as Joey, a bartender at a gay bar in the Dupont Circle area of the city, was walking home. He says something hit him hard in the back of the neck and the next thing he remembers is waking up in the hospital. A passerby saw him lying unconscious on the ground and called 911. Joey had two broken vertebrae in his neck.
Because Joey is gay, works at a gay bar, and the Dupont Circle area is the San Francisco of Washington DC, everyone naturally assumed this was a homophobic hate crime. A GoFundMe page was set up for Joey based on the idea he was a victim and it raised over $18,000. Even the cops were investigating this as a violent hateful attack.
The results if the DC Metro PD investigation are in and this is it:
“After further investigation, MPD determined he was not struck with an object from behind, but fell. This is no longer a criminal case and out of respect for this individual’s privacy, we will not be commenting further,” said MPD in a statement.
The cops didn’t explain how they came to this conclusion, which is a shame because there are so many unanswered questions. If this guy just tripped and fell, how did he manage to knock himself out with a blow to the back of the neck? Was he walking backwards? Did he slip on a banana peel like a cartoon character? This was in July so he didn’t slip on a patch of ice.
More importantly, did Joey actually file a false police report about a hate crime and if so, why isn’t he being charged for that? There actually is an answer for that last question because minorities never get charged with hoaxing hate crimes. I guess police figure they have been victimized enough if they are so desperate as to make up a story of victimization.
If the cops found some surveillance video of Joey tripping, or intentionally hurting himself, this could actually be a fairly major crime considering he solicited funds based on a fabricated hate assault. This is a thought not lost on Joey who has offered to return the money raised for his “hate crime.”
“I wanted to thank everyone for their help and support during my recovery. I also wanted to take a moment to thank MPD who has been able to shed some light on the incident. While my initial conclusions from the incident lead me to believe I was a victim of a crime, MPD was able to determine that this was indeed just an unfortunate accident. I want to thank MPD for helping me discover this, and I want to apologize to anyone who feels mislead by my initial assessment of the situation. Thank you all for your support. If you would like your money back please contact GoFundMe. I understand and I honestly had no idea what happened at the time,” wrote Joey.
If that doesn’t sound like something that was written after a lawyer consolation, I don’t know what does. Seriously, am I the only one who thinks this whole story smells fishy?
Whatever the truth is here, one thing is for certain; yet another hate crime turns out to be bullshit. If only the media had as much interest in the debunked truth as they do with the hoaxed hate, maybe people wouldn’t falsely think there is a hate crime wave in this country.
