All week long The Washington Post and The New York Times have engaged in a fake news bombshell war. Monday WaPo falsely claimed Donald Trump revealed classified information to the Russians. Tuesday NYT falsely claimed Trump tried to interfere with an FBI investigation. Wednesday WaPo tried to pass a joke off as proof that Trump was on Putin’s payroll. It’s now Thursday and the best the NYT can do is say that Trump gave fired FBI director James Comey the heebbie jeebbies.
Of all the “bombshells” this week, this one is easily the longest and most boring. The NYT talked to Benjamin Wittes who is a Trump hater and claims to be a friend of James Comey. According to Wittes, Trump left Comet feeling “unsettled” because he was trying to establish a relationship. Just check this stuff out:
The ceremony occurred in the Blue Room of the White House, where many senior law enforcement officials — including the Secret Service director — had gathered. Mr. Comey — who is 6 feet 8 inches tall and was wearing a dark blue suit that day – told Mr. Wittes that he tried to blend in with the blue curtains in the back of the room, in the hopes that Mr. Trump would not spot him and call him out.
Is it just me or does Comey trying to hide in the curtains make him seem like the creepy one here?
As if that’s not bad enough, there was this encounter:
“Comey said that as he was walking across the room he was determined that there wasn’t going to be a hug,” Mr. Wittes said. “It was bad enough there was going to be a handshake. And Comey has long arms so Comey said he pre-emptively reached out for a handshake and grabbed the president’s hand. But Trump pulled him into an embrace and Comey didn’t reciprocate.
Again, Comey thought shaking hands with the President of the United States was a horrible thing, which makes him a dick. I’d say Comey, not Trump is the unsettled one in this situation.
The only other example given for why Comey got the creeps from Trump is a time that the President requested a meeting with him. I’m not kidding when I say this is all the “evidence” that Trump made Comey uneasy.
I say that if Comey was so freaked out by Trump that he didn’t want to have any kind of relationship with him at all, he deserved to be fired. Well that and the fact that he was dangerously incompetent at his job.
My biggest question here is: in what way does this qualify as news? I can’t even figure out what the point of this story is. I mean I get it that the NYT is trying to make Trump look like a stalker, but they fail miserably at that. At least they finally used a source with a name instead of anonymous “officials” but the story lacks any purpose other than “we hate Trump.”
The ball is now in The Washington Post’s court to see if they can out bombshell the New York Times on Friday. Hopefully they can come up with something a little more Earth-shattering than James Comey is kind of a dick.
