Every few years the State of California enacts a new slate of gun control laws. When those don’t do anything to reduce crime, they pass another bunch of unconstitutional restrictions on gun ownership. Starting next January, Cali’s latest gun control laws go into effect and the state is smack-talking the federal government for not being as proactive. The thing is, it looks like this bragging is just the state’s sudden interest in enforcing a law that has been on the books since 1968.
Smug liberal Lt. Governor Gavin Newsome sent out this video that gives Congress crap for not stomping on the Constitution they way California does:
It’s been 5 years since 20 first graders were shot dead at Sandy Hook.
14 killed in San Bernardino
49 killed in Orlando
58 killed in Vegas
26 killed in a Texas church

“We passed Proposition 63. Starting in January we’ll begin forcing violent convicted felons to give up their firearms. So if you’re a dangerous criminal, we really are coming for your guns,” says Newsome in the video.
Here’s a fair question: Why hasn’t California been taking guns away from violent felons all along? Here’s another one: Why are they just going to start doing this in January?
Convicted felons are not allowed to purchase or possess firearms. This is not a new “innovative” crime-fighting law that California just passed. It was part of the restrictions imposed by the Gun Control Act of 1968. That’s a law that is almost 50-years-old. This was was also reinforced by the Brady Handgun Violence Act in 1993, which established the background check requirement for gun purchases.
This is like California bragging that they will end theft by finally enforcing burglary laws that have existed longer than anyone can remember. While they are at it, why don’t they stamp out rape and murder with the enforcement of existing anti-rape and murder laws?
This is just an admission by the state that instead of enforcing existing laws, they have been passing gun control laws that only restrict the rights of law abiding people. As a Californian this is something I’ve known all along, but it’s nice to see they’re finally coming clean about being so full of shit for so long.
The reality of things is that Prop 63 doesn’t have anything to do with taking guns away from violent felons. It bans normal capacity magazines that were grandfathered in after the last round of Cali gun control laws and requires people to pass a background check to buy ammunition.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who California considers the “violent felons” who need to be disarmed. It’s the law abiding people who have been made into criminals by this latest gun control law.
The stupidest thing about this are the words Newsome put in at the end of his tweet: “We have a message for the [NRA]: If you hurt people, we ARE coming for your guns.”
Not only does this accuse the NRA of hurting people, it’s a threat to disarm the civil rights organization. I don’t doubt that California’s gun control laws are aimed at the NRA and lawful gun owners, but it’s terribly dishonest for them to say they are targeting violent felons or doing anything to stop crime.
