For the longest time Obama refused to use Donald Trump’s name, perhaps fearing it was some sort of evil incantation. A Church in California has picked up on this idea and will not allow Trump’s name to be used in any prayers. Their reasoning is that the President-elect’s name is a “trauma trigger” (whatever the hell that is) and is damaging to the congregation.
The rector for the All Saints Church in Pasadena, CA issued new guidelines for prayer in a blog post. While in the past the church has prayed for Barack Obama by name, from this point forward any prayers for the leader of the country will be for the title only. Instead of praying for Donald Trump specifically and by name, the prayer will henceforth be simply for “the president.”
The reason for this is particularly insane:
We are in a unique situation in my lifetime where we have a president elect whose name is literally a trauma trigger to some people – particularly women and people who, because of his words and actions, he represents an active danger to health and safety.
Yes, you read that correctly. This church actually believes that Trump is a threat to the health and safety of its members, as if the leader of the free world is going to show up and start killing church members. If you think that is crazy, check this out where the church equates Trump to a wife-beater:
This presents a challenge. We are rightly charged with praying for our leaders … but we are also charged with keeping the worshipping community, while certainly not challenge-free, a place of safety from harm. As I have said before, for some it could be as if we demanded a battered woman pray for her abuser by name. It’s not that the abuser doesn’t need prayer – certainly the opposite – but prayer should never be a trauma-causing act.
I should point out that Donald Trump has literally done nothing to anyone who is a member of this church. He hasn’t beaten or raped any of them as indicated by this post. He also hasn’t threatened anyone who attends this church with harm. If anyone at the church feels Trump is a threat, it’s because they are liberal nutcases who believe all of the liberal media fake news.
The question is – does saying the president’s name in prayer in this way compromise the safety of the worshipping community? Let me be clear that I believe this is a high bar … much more than “I disagree with the president” or even “the president deeply offends me.” This is the level of compromising the safety of the worshipping community.
In case you were wondering, this church is a whacko liberal activist church that spends as much time on social justice as it does on God. Their website is full of anti-racism, pro-illegal alien, and pro-ObamaCare mumbo-jumbo. Check this out:
At All Saints Church we will enter this new era in our nation’s history with prayers for our country and a recommitment to sacred resistance. We will stand in resistance to the systemic evils that oppress and marginalize any member of our human family – including but not limited to racism, sexism, nativism, homophobia, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Grounded in our baptismal promises, our resistance to public policies that perpetuate those evils is how we put our faith into action in the world.
Though the church has referred to the next President of the United States as a racist misogynist monster who is likely to kill their congregation, they still intend to pray for Donald Trump, just not by name because that might trigger PTSD in their members. Maybe they should pray for their own sanity instead.
