Well this is certainly dumb. The International Olympic Committee wants two members of the USA Women’s Ice Hockey Team to remove images of the Statue of Liberty from their goalie masks. Why? Apparently it’s a little too political for the IOC, which is the one of the most political (and corrupt) organizations around. This is kind of like Planned Parenthood being upset that someone has an extremist position or the Democratic Party complaining that a group is too full of shit. Oh wait, both of those things happen all the time.
USA Today reports that the IOC informed USA Hockey that goalies Nicole Hensley and Alex Rigsby would have to remove representations of the Statue of Liberty from their masks. Hensley has Lady Liberty on the side of her mask and Rigby has one on the chin of hers. Neither of these goalies has played in a a game yet.
Get ready for some insanity. Here’s the reason the IOC says the Statue of Liberty must go:
The IOC views the image as a possible violation of its policy against political symbols. The rule from the IOC Guidelines Regarding Authorized Identifications: No item may feature the wording or lyrics from national anthems, motivational words, public/political messaging or slogans related to national identity.
Um, isn’t every flag of every nation competing in the Olympics a political symbol? Aren’t national anthems played when an athlete wins a gold medal political symbols? Come to think of it, the uniforms the athletes wear to represent their countries would also qualify as political symbols under the IOC’s rules.
You may have noticed that the Statue of Liberty is not words or a slogan, but rather a statue…of liberty. Yes, it’s a symbol of America, but a maple leaf is a symbol of Canada and their Olympic teams are covered in those things. Every goalie mask in the Olympics features images related to the country of the goalie and for some reason only USA is a problem?
I call bullshit and here’s why:
On Monday North Korean cheerleaders were wearing masks of communist dictator Kim Il-sung who started the Korean War at the Korea vs. Switzerland women’s hockey game (Korea lost 8-0 BTW).Isn’t that kind of a political statement? I noticed the IOC didn’t really have a problem with that and the liberal US media absolutely swooned over it.
USA Hockey is trying to work with the IOC to resolve their demand that the Statue of Liberty be removed from the women’s hockey team goalie masks. I don’t know what these negotiations involve, but with the IOC it probably means a giving them a big sack of money with a dollar sign on it. The right kind of bribe can make even the anti-American IOC forget their anti-American sentiments.
