It’s been a while since Jesse Jackson said something stupid and I was getting worried that he has finally come to his senses. Thankfully he’s still as crazy and misinformed as ever. For some reason, the race-hustling reverend used the anniversary of MLK’s assassination to call for a ban on “assault weapons” and even declared the United States the most violent country in the world. He was way off, but maybe his fact-checker was taking a “me” day and wasn’t there to keep him saying something that is so far from truth it qualifies as a liberal “fact.”
Jackson was in Memphis to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s death and did an interview with a local TV station, but they couldn’t get much out of him. First he dropped this pearl of wisdom:
“The poverty in the greater Memphis area is abounding,” said Jackson.
While what Jackson said is technically correct it certainly comes off as kind of weird. “Abounding” means plentiful or abundant, but it is generally used to describe something good as in “the gifts of the Lord are abounding.” What Jackson basically said is that there is a lot of poverty in Memphis but it’s a beautiful thing for all of the poor people.
Next, Jackson claimed the best way to honor MLK is like this:
“We must ban assault weapons and stop the killing. We live in the most violent nation on earth. We are killing each other. We make too many guns,” said Jackson.
Was MLK killed by someone with an assault rifle? I thought for sure James Earl Ray used a .30-06 pump-action Remington Gamemaster Model 760. I guess anything is an assault rifle to liberals, huh?
As for that thing about America being the most violent nation on Earth, is he joking? Has he ever been anywhere else, like perhaps Syria or Iraq? There’s plenty of places that are currently at war that would definitely qualify as being infinitely more violent than the US.
Even if we just go by murder rates, The US is way down on the list. El Salvador, Honduras, Venezuela, Jamaica, and the African nation of Lesotho are the top 5 most violent countries. Most of the list is made up of African, Central American, South American, and Middle Eastern countries.
The US doesn’t show up on the list until #94, wedged between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Borat would be proud that his country beat America with a slightly lower murder rate. Wawaweewa!
The World Economic Forum ranked 136 countries on how safe they are for tourists, which would be another indicator of how violent a country is. The worst of the worst looks like this:
3. El Salvador
Again, the US is not anywhere near the top of the most dangerous countries, because it’s simply not a violent place like all of these shitholes.
Jackson has previously said that “assault weapons” can be used to blow up trains and shoot commercial aircraft out of the sky, so it’s possible that when he talks about guns and violence, that he might be exaggerating a smudge. Then again maybe he just doesn’t know where the Earth is.
