The general consensus on the left is that good guys with guns can’t stop bad guys with guns. They also believe that “puny” handguns can’t possibly kill a madman with a high-powered assault rifle. That’s what makes this campaign stunt seem even crazier. A democrat running for Congress in Colorado thinks pepper spray is a good weapon to go up against an AR-15 wielding maniac and to prove his point he hit himself in the face with it. I’m pretty sure he will lock up the lunatic vote with this, but everyone else? Probably not.
Levi Tillemann is a former energy adviser to Obama and like the former president, he wants to ban guns and make sure school kids are as unprotected as possible. In a campaign ad for his Congressional run, he says he wants to ban “assault rifles” and normal-capacity magazines. He also wants background checks and a ban on domestic violence abusers owning guns, which already exist.
His biggest point of contention is that President Trump wants to arm and train teachers, so in the unlikely event of a school shooting, there will be good guys to protect the kids. According to Tillemann, the only thing armed teachers means is accidental killings of students, so he is proposing to arm teachers with pepper spray.
To prove just how effective a can of eye-irritant can be against a heavily armed crazy person who doesn’t give a f*ck, Tillemann blasted himself in the face with some pepper spray. The video then shows his reaction as he tries to wash the stuff out of his eyes. He seems to think it’s kind of funny, which isn’t exactly the reaction that would sell people on pepper spray being a solid defense weapon.
Another thing missing from his demonstration is any kind of real danger. To truly demonstrate his point, he should have been the one with the pepper spray going up against someone with a loaded AR-15 who is killing innocent people. If Tillemann was able to successfully disarm the killer, than his pepper spray proposal is at least viable. If he got perforated multiple times while trying to spray the gunman, then his proposal is probably not a great idea.
As anyone with an ounce of commonsense knows, guns have a greater range and more lethality than a can of pepper spray. We don’t even have to do a realistic experiment to know that bringing pepper spray to a gun fight isn’t the wisest choice.
Unlike the false claim that armed teachers would end up killing students, I guarantee that if teachers had pepper spray, they use it on the kids all the time. A lot of students are disrespectful assholes, and teachers often hit a breaking point. If there was pepper spray in every classroom in America, there would be several incidents per day where a teacher sprayed an out-of-control student. An armed teacher that has been trained would respect the lethal power of a firearm, but a rando educator with some non-lethal pepper spray would go to town on the rowdy students.
