When black guy Philando Castile was shot and killed by a Minnesota police officer, he was armed and refused to obey commands. That was considered an outrage and sparked protests and riots. Minnesota police just shot and killed an unarmed white woman, but so far the only outrage comes from her family and the streets haven’t erupted in demands for justice. It’s weird how that works, huh?
This is actually one of the most tragic and pointless killings I’ve heard about. 40-year-old Justine Damond is from Australian and was slated to marry her American fiancé next month. She lived in Minneapolis with her husband-to-be and her son. Her fiancé was away on business last Saturday night when she heard a commotion in the alley behind their house.
Fox 9 tells us that Damond called 911 to report an assault taking place. It doesn’t appear as if she was involved, just that she was witnessing someone else being assaulted. The Minneapolis police responded to that call around 11:30pm. It’s unclear if they discovered the assault or even investigated it, but what they did do was shoot Justine Diamond to death.
Why did they do this? The police won’t say. They will not give out even the slightest details of the shooting other than acknowledging that there was a shooting. Conveniently enough both of the responding officers had their body cameras turned off.
The story actually gets worse when you check out The Star Tribune’s version of events:
Three sources with knowledge of the incident said Sunday that two officers in one squad car, responding to the 911 call, pulled into the alley. Damond, in her pajamas, went to the driver’s side door and was talking to the driver. The officer in the passenger seat pulled his gun and shot Damond through the driver’s side door, sources said. No weapon was found at the scene.
Holy shit! That’s horrifying.
The story the Minneapolis police are fine with for the time being is that a woman called to report a crime and cops showed up to kill her. I guess because this woman is white, they aren’t in a mad scramble to frame this in a more favorable light. They aren’t trying to say she was armed or tried to attack the officers. The police are literally cool with the story: “Yeah, we killed her.”
Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges gave this confusing statement regarding the shooting:
“I’ve been heartsick every time there’s been an officer-involved shooting, but it has been made clear to me by the people I represent that they want to make certain that’s how I feel,” said Hodges.
Huh? She doesn’t acknowledge or name the victim, gives no details on the shooting, and kind of seems like she’s giving a campaign speech by pandering to her base.
Justine Damond’s son summed everything up about this needles tragedy:
“Basically, my mom’s dead because a police officer shot her for reasons I don’t know,” said Zach Damond.
Justine wasn’t some street thug. She wasn’t armed or threatening to the police in any way. She wasn’t resisting arrest, nor do she try to take an officer’s gun. All she did was call police to report a crime. She was killed for being a responsible citizen. This is worse that all of the black criminals who died attacking cops put together, so why is there no outrage?
