Since Donald Trump won the presidential election last November sore loser liberals have done every desperate thing to challenge and de-legitimize the results. From recounts to an Electoral College revolt that never happened, they just can’t accept that America rejected liberalism and the Democratic Party. While it may seem like a done deal that Trump is the next president, liberals still have one pathetic ace up their sleeve. They actually believe that tomorrow, the US Congress is going to install Colin Powell as president because of a seriously flawed understanding of the way things work.
On Friday a joint session of Congress will convene for the formality of ratifying the Electoral College vote, making Trump’s election official. The lefty nitwits have prepared a “bombshell” report saying that 50 Electors illegally voted for Trump, which they say puts him below the 270 votes needed to become president. If Trump is below the threshold, they argue, then Congress must give the presidency to the second Republican leading vote-getter, which is former Secretary of State Colin Powell. I know, it’s complete nonsense.
According to this report, 50 Republican Electors violated state laws with their votes. Either they didn’t live in the Congressional district they were elected to represent or they held dual offices, meaning they were Electors and some other state elected official at the same time.
In general, two types of state laws were violated—(1) laws requiring electors to represent districts where they reside and (2) laws prohibiting dual-office holding. At least 16 Republican electors lived outside the congressional districts they represented, and approximately 34 Republican electors held dual offices—as presidential elector and state official…
Trump won 304 Electoral College votes, but if 50 of them are determined to be invalid, then he would only have 254. The reasoning, if you can call it that, is that since Trump failed to reach the 270 mark, it is the duty of Congress to reject all of his EC votes. Since the Republicans won the election and control both chambers of Congress, they presumably have to go with the next top vote-getter Colin Powell, who got a couple of “faithless Elector” votes.
There are several problems with this last-ditch insanity. The first being that it’s up to the states how they do things. If Electors violated any state laws, that’s the state’s problem, not the feds. The fact that all of the states have certified their votes means, this is a dead issue.
Next, Trump earned all of the EC votes he got. If a state Elector violated some kind of local ordinance, he would or should be replaced by another Elector who would then vote for Trump anyway. Again, this doesn’t matter because all of the states have already completed their voting.
Even if by some miracle these 50 votes are determined to be illegal by Congress, Trump still has more votes than Hillary Clinton or Colin Powell. The Republican controlled House and Senate are still going to ratify Trump as president.
The biggest problem however with this liberal pipe-dream is this little disclaimer that comes along with the report claiming 50 Electors broke the law:
We cannot guarantee that all of the law contained herein is complete or that the evidence is accurate.
That’s just brilliant. If the report is neither complete nor accurate, what exactly was the point of issuing it?
Friday Congress will ratify Donald Trump’s election and two weeks later he will be sworn in. No amount of liberal crying and complaining is going to stop that from happening. The American people elected him and the laws of the United States will ensure he takes office.
