Apparently President Trump’s efforts to enforce our immigration laws are working. The annual Cinco de Mayo parade in Philadelphia was cancelled because organizers are worried that Immigration and Customs Enforcement will show up and arrest illegal aliens. It’s an unfounded fear but it does show that law breaking immigrants no longer feel comfortable in this country and that’s a good thing.
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the 5th of May, which is a date that the Mexican army beat the French in battle. It ain’t much to brag about and people in Mexico don’t even celebrate it. Here in America, Latinos go crazy for the holiday because it gives them an excuse to get drunk and show how little they are willing to assimilate. According to NBC 10 things will be a little less obnoxious in Philly this year:
One of Philadelphia’s most prominent Latin American events, El Carnaval de Puebla, has been canceled this year because of what one organizer called “the severe conditions affecting the immigrant community.”
The annual parade through South Philadelphia has taken place in late April or early May for the last decade and is the city’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration. Organizer Edgar Ramirez said as many as 15,000 gather from as far as New England and Chicago.
The decision to cancel El Carnaval, Ramirez said in an interview Friday, was “sad but responsible” in light of the immigration crackdown by federal authorities.
He said the entire Mexican-American community, both those here legally and those undocumented, are disheartened by reports of large-scale arrests and detainments by officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“The group of six organizers decided to cancel unanimously. Everyone is offended by the actions of ICE. They did not feel comfortable holding the event,” said Ramirez.
Wait, they are offended that ICE is enforcing the law? What’s really offensive is people who break the law and then try to make it seem like anyone who has a problem with it are racists.
The fear of federal immigration officers targeting the well-known celebration would have cast a dark cloud over what is among the most colorful and joyful on Philadelphia’s Latin American calendar, [Ramirez] said.
ICE issued a statement basically saying that the festival organizers are being paranoid kooks:
“ICE’s enforcement actions are targeted and lead driven. ICE does not conduct sweeps or raids that target aliens indiscriminately,” said ICE Officer Khaalid Walls.
The Mexican consulate however fed right into their irrational fears:
A spokesman with the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia said they are aware of Carnaval’s cancellation and that consular officials are not surprised about the current demeanor of citizens and undocumented immigrants alike.
“I would understand why people are scared or worried. But our message is that we are with them. People should try to continue to live their lives as regular as possible, but in a well-informed matter,” said consular spokesman Carlos Torres.
Yeah, as regular a life as a person can live when they are in a country illegally, I guess.
The point of this news story is to make everyone think that Trump’s immigration policies are cruel, but I see this as a very positive sign. If illegal aliens are too scared to celebrate in the streets of a US city, that means they are starting to get the idea they don’t belong. We’ve been too accommodating for too long but now it looks like things are changing. Illegal aliens no longer feel comfortable here and hopefully will start self-deporting.
