Obama’s back-door assault on gun rights got a boost today when the lame duck Senate confirmed anti-gun activist Vivek Murthy for the position of Surgeon General. Thanks to Harry Reid’s “nuclear option” Republicans were powerless to block this nomination. Murthy was confirmed by a slim 51-43 vote.
The NRA and gun rights supporters everywhere have been against Murthy’s confirmation because he is decidedly hostile to the 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms. As Surgeon General he can bypass the Constitution and declare gun violence a public health crisis and use federal funds and resources to chip away at legal gun ownership. This is really one of the worst things Obama and the democrats have ever done.
Murthy’s nomination had been held up for more than a year after conservative groups, led by the National Rifle Association, publicized tweets in which he called guns a “public health issue.” He had previously declared support for policies such as background checks and ammunition limits and accused members of Congress of “playing politics” with guns because they were “scared of the NRA.”
I also cataloged Murthy’s rabid hatred of firearms months ago.
Hell, even anti-gun democrat Joe Manchin opposed the nomination. The co-author of the Manchin-Toomey gun control bill voted against Murthy saying:
“I don’t believe it’s appropriate for America’s number one doctor to participate in political activism.”
“I don’t question his medical qualifications; I just question whether the public will believe that he can separate his political beliefs from his public health views. I am wary that his past comments and political involvement will have an impact on his leadership capabilities and effectiveness.”
Don’t think Murthy is a danger to our Constitutional rights? Look at this:
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released a statement minutes after the vote calling Murthy’s appointment a “huge victory” for gun control supporters.
“Now we have a Surgeon General who recognizes that gun violence is a serious public health issue that America urgently needs to address,” the organization’s president Dan Gross wrote.
And you want to know what’s messed up about this? One Republican, Senator Mark Kirk from Illinois, voted in favor of Murthy’s confirmation. Remember, the democrats needed only a simple majority to push Murthy through, meaning they needed 51 votes. A Republican was that 51st vote, with 3 democrats voting against the nomination. This is sickening.
Obama knows he can’t get gun control through the Congress, especially since Republicans will soon control both houses, so he continues to whittle away at gun rights through executive action, and creative Justice Department enforcement. With Murthy, the rogue President gets another tool to ignore the Constitution and further degrade our natural born rights.
