Someone anonymously put up posters celebrating “Straight Pride Week” on the Youngston State University campus in Ohio this week. Needless to say, students were outraged by this expression of free speech. Well, okay maybe only 2 or 3 students had a reaction, but they had plenty of outrage for everyone.
The poster in question is not only really funny, but also makes a great point about the absurdity of the gay pride movement:
We’re taking back the rainbow
Celebrate Straight Pride Week At YSU!
May 1st – 8th
What better way to kick off finals week?
Join us in celebrating straight pride week at YSU by not annoying the shit out of everyone about your sexual orientation!
It’s easy to join too! Just come to YSU, then go about your day without telling everyone about how “different” you are.
Brought to you by the students that are sick of hearing about your LGBT pride. Nobody cares about what you think you are, or what you want to have sex with. We have nothing against your sexual orientation. We just don’t give a fuck.
I think the message is hilarious and spot on, however, here’s how The Huffington Post describes the posters:
Students at an Ohio university say they were “blindsided” earlier this week after homophobic messages appeared around campus.
There is absolutely no homphobia in this poster, and as for students (with an “s”) being blindsided, it’s more like student (singular):
“This feels like it came out of nowhere… and I honestly feel blindsided by it. It’s not something that I expected from our student body. Everybody for the most part, they’re angry, they’re confused,” said Lisa Ronquillo, vice president of an LGBT student organization.
Tim Bortner, president of Youngstown’s LGBT group, YSUnity said the posters made gay students “feel unsafe.”
As you can imagine, the University reacted swiftly to these posters:
YSU officials immediately removed the posters from around the campus, Ron Cole, the university’s public information officer, told The Huffington Post. He said the school has no sanctioned “straight pride week” and the messages were “completely bogus.”
“With the help of a bunch of students, we quickly went out to take them all down,” Cole said. “Reaction has ranged from concern to outrage. While we recognize the right to free speech, this is counter to our mission of being a diverse and accepting campus.”
If Cole is running around campus pulling down posters that aren’t explicitly pornographic and don’t issue a credible threat, clearly he does not “recognize the right to free speech.” Either that, or he has no idea what free speech means.
And I’m guessing when he talks about being a “diverse and accepting campus,” what he really means is everyone except white straight males.
So if you are keeping score at home, and I hope you are, the rules go like this:
If you are proud to be a peaceful Christian; you are an extremist. If you are proud to be a Muslim extremist; you are peaceful.
Black pride fights racism. White pride is racism.
Girl Power is liberating. Men’s rights are debilitating.
And now: gay pride speaks against hate. Straight pride is hate speech.
Is it just me or do these rules seem like they were lifted form George Orwell’s 1984?
