Democrats talk about a blue wave in November, winning back Congress from Republican control. They don’t have much of a message (high taxes, abolish ICE, take guns, etc…) and with each passing day it looks less and less likely they will win the midterms. VICE however has a rock solid plan for the dems to prevail: own people online. The key to democrats’ victory is trolling people on the internet? I know I say ‘that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard’ way too often when it comes to the left, but seriously, that’s really really stupid.
Here’s a real headline from VICE: Owning People Online Really Is the Left’s Path to Victory
Boom! Mic drop! Pwned! You broke the Internet right after you won the Internet!
I get that Donald Trump has been very successful using Twitter to get his message out and by-pass the liberal fake news industry, but this isn’t something just anyone can do. Have you seen Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, or Hillary Clinton tweets? They are witless fools who couldn’t troll if their lives depended upon it.
The actual point of the VICE article is more leftist love for Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:
Joe Crowley, the incumbent congressman in New York’s 14th District, had $3 million, much of it from corporate interests, in his reelection war chest. He had key endorsements from Senator Kristen Gillibrand and New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio. He had gone unchallenged for the better part of two decades. Still, on June 26 he lost the Democratic primary to Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who had raised less than a third of what he had by relying on small donors. She is now on her way to Congress to replace him in no small part because she owned him online.
Cortez is an idiot so I think that speaks more about Joe Crowley than it does for the effectiveness of her ability to break the Internet. If you can get owned by someone who doesn’t understand basic economics or where Israel is, like Cortez, than you are a pretty sorry individual.
In reality the VICE article is something that could have been written by your grandmother. It’s basically saying that politicians are suddenly using social media to reach voters. Wow, is that something just happened with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? I could have sworn other politicians have used social media before her. I guess since she invented socialism (she did’t) she deserves credit for being the first politician to use social media (she doesn’t).
And the thing is, simply posting stuff about your message and campaign isn’t “owning” anyone. It’s just using social media in the least interesting way possible. When Trump is calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” and demanding that she take a DNA test to prove her false claims of Native American heritage, that’s a mic drop. When Ted Cruz challenges Jimmy Kimmel to a one-on-one basketball game and then kicks his ass, that “pwnage.”
Hillary Clinton tweeting out that victims of sexual assault have a right to be believed, when she’s married to a sexual predator, is Hillary owning herself. Elizabeth Warren tweeting that Trump calling her ‘Pocahontas’ is racist, when she’s a white woman pretending to be an Indian princess, is another example of self-ownage. The crap on Kamala Harris’ Twitter is so insanely stupid the platform should ban her for her own safety.
The key to democrats winning in November isn’t their nonexistent ability to smack people down on the Interwebz, it’s coming up with a message that isn’t horrifying to Americans. You want votes? Don’t tell us you are going to raise our taxes, eliminate our borders, and steal our Constitutional rights. It’s really that simple.
