As the events of the “Unite The Right” rally unfold in Charlottesville, VA Saturday, a truly disturbing thing has happened. No, it’s not white supremacists clashing with lefty anarchists, or even a car plowing into a crowd of people; apparently white nationalists are using NHL team The Detroit Red Wings logo to symbolize their hate. This time those white power assholes have gone too far.
Check this shit out:
I look away for 12 hours and the Detroit Red Wings have become a symbol for neo-Nazi dickheads? pic.twitter.com/s7aBiyYkmA

Yeah, that’s some racist losers sporting the iconic Red Wings “winged wheel” logo.
Full disclosure: I am a huge Red Wings fan and have seen them play more times than I can count. I literally cried when they won the Stanley Cup in ‘97 after a very long championship drought. I even have their winged wheel logo tattooed on my arm above the Detroit mascot “Al the Octopus.”
I have no idea why these neo-Nazis are sporting the Redwings logo, but I agree with Twitter that they should knock it off. Seriously, what about wheel with a wing coming off of it attracts these people to the logo? I guess if they were called the “White Wings” I could see it, but that ain’t the case.
It makes even less sense that they picked a team from Detroit to represent their whiteness. Detroit is one of the blackest cities in North America. They should have at least taken the logo from one of the whiter cities in the NHL like Calgary or Edmonton.
For their part, the Detroit Redwings issued a statement condemning the coopting of their logo:
The Detroit Red Wings vehemently disagree with and are not associated in any way with the events taking place today in Charlottesville, Va. The Red Wings believe hockey is for Everyone and we celebrate the great diversity or our fan base and our nation. We are exploring every possible legal action as it pertains to the misuse of our login this disturbing demonstration.
I was fine when white supremacists took Pepe the Frog and milk to symbolize their racism, but this is more than I can handle. I actually do hope the Red Wings sue these knuckleheads into oblivion. Just being a conservative, I’m already accused of being racist. The last thing I need is people attacking me for having a “white power” tattoo or freaking out over my “white nationalist” Steve Yzerman jersey.
