St. Louis police officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man who had allegedly robbed a convenience store on Tuesday.
Just four miles from where Michael Brown was killed during a confrontation with an officer earlier this month, a convenience store clerk called 911, alleging that 25-year-old Kajieme Powell had stolen two drinks and donuts. Security camera footage confirmed this.
A released cell phone video shows Powell place the cans on the ground and pace back and forth as he waits for the police to arrive.
Police arrive and two officers get out of their vehicle. Powell steps up on a parking lot curb and approaches the officers.
He reportedly yells “shoot me, shoot me now motherf*cker.”
As he gets within a few feet from one cop, the officers opened fire, shooting the suspect 12 times.
The video also shows the officers cuffing Powell even though he died immediately.
“I don’t think any of us can deny that the tension not only in St. Louis but around the country and the world because of the activities in Ferguson over the last 10 or 12 days certainly has led us making sure that we got this right and answered as many questions as quickly as we can,” Police Chief Sam Dotson said.
“The officers did what I think you or I would do, they protected their life in that situation,” Dotson added. “In a lethal situation, they used lethal force.”
