Last night on Fox News Channel, Greta van Susteren interviewed Brit Hume about the fallout from Democrats shutting down the World War II Memorial in Washington. Hume pointed out that the efforts of these Democrats to make the shutdown look bad have backfired.
As the lead-in, Greta played a montage of soundbites from various people talking about the memorial shutdown. Our favorite was that of Rep. Louis Gohmert, who pointed out that it actually cost more money to shut down the memorial than it did to leave it open. “What are they going to do next, hang a drapery over Mount Rushmore?” Gohmert asked.
After playing the soundbites, Greta threw it over to Hume.
“The plain fact about that World War II Memorial closing is that it backfired terribly,” he said. “There was no need to close that memorial. Congressman Gohmert is correct. It’s adjacent to the sidewalk. It’s simply an open air memorial. Much of the time there’s nobody there to attend it anyway. You can just walk through there. Closing it took more effort than leaving it open would have. But the effort was clearly being made to try to get people to ‘get’ that the government was closed and that it was a bad thing. It backfired.”
Greta then explained that the memorial was not a building, but rather an open air monument. “It’s stunning that this happened,” she noted.
“Well, Greta, it was a mistake,” Hume replied.
We should point out that the memorial has since been re-opened. Apparently, Democrats have realized that screwing with our great veterans to make a political point is a losing position.
