In a very fortuitous piece of news today it was reported that Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabaab had released a video threatening shopping malls in the United States and other countries. The Mecca for American shoppers that is Minnesota’s Mall of America was named as the top potential target prompting a heightened state of alert. The alleged threat nicely coincides with the coming deadline to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security this Friday.
Not that the rogue government would ever resort to exaggeration or God forbid, outright lying about such a thing but the timing might lead the more cynical among us to question if it is all a hoax. The news broke right before Obama’s Homeland Security czar, Secretary Jeh Johnson did the full Monte by showing up on all five of the Sunday morning television McNews shows and he used it effectively to make his case.
Secretary Johnson was practically beaming like the Cheshire cat as he wielded the alleged Al-Shabaab threat like a bludgeon to scare Congress into fully funding the Leviathan that is DHS. According to a story from The Guardian entitled “Al-Shabaab mall threat ‘all the more reason’ to avoid shutdown, says homeland security chief”:
The US homeland security secretary on Sunday seized on a new threat of attacks against western shopping centres by Islamist terrorists to pressure Congress to avert a partial shutdown of his department and agree to a funding deal.
Jeh Johnson said a propaganda video released by al-Shabaab on Saturday calling for strikes on the Mall of America in Minnesota, Oxford Street and two Westfield malls in London, and Canada’s West Edmonton Mall, showed “all the more reason why I need a budget”.
“It’s absurd that we’re even having this conversation about Congress’s inability to fund homeland security in these challenging times,” Johnson told CNN. On ABC, he said “it’s imperative that we get it resolved”, adding that senators and members of the House were each blaming those in the other chamber for the impasse.
Conservative Republicans in Congress are refusing to pass a budget for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unless it includes measures to roll back President Obama’s executive actions that would protect millions of undocumented immigrants from being deported. Last week, House Speaker John Boehner said he was prepared to let DHS funding lapse.
The agency’s $40bn budget is due to expire on Friday. Johnson said a failure to pass a new budget would mean 30,000 of his employees would be furloughed and “frontline” staff would be forced to work without pay.
“I’m hoping someone will exercise leadership,” he told CNN.
So John Boehner’s big gambit to not use his leverage over a partial government shutdown in December by deferring the decision on DHS funding has come back to bite him in his orange hued ass. Speaker Boehner of course blames it all on the Democrats and by extension his fellow “leader” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. However, once again he is going to be the cheese-eating surrender monkey who gives yet another win to his golfing and drinking buddy Barack Obama.
It didn’t have to be this way either. The opportunity to take a stand against Barry’s decree granting amnesty to public service draining, anchor baby dropping, wage depressing illegal aliens was practically given to him on a silver platter and the incompetent ass pissed it all away. Maybe it would have been different had the House GOP actually honored the will of the voters and turned the leadership position over to someone who isn’t a corrupt and incompetent drunkard. But then again if my aunt had testicles she’d be my uncle.
With the perpetual fear machine now being cranked up several notches it is only going to be a few days until Boehner backs down and issues his unconditional surrender to the hated Obama. I personally suspect that the Mall of America threat is just another hoax, like the alleged but never proven North Korean threats to blow up movie theaters showing The Interview a few months back. It really sucks when the default position on all statements coming out of the federal government is to view them as bullshit but such are the times in which we live today.
