It was never a question of if Speaker of the House John Boehner was going to cave on fully funding the Department of Homeland Security by surrendering on Obama’s amnesty decree, it was only a matter of when. Today it appears that question has been answered and it looks like a “clean” DHS funding bill may make it to the House floor as early as Wednesday.
In the story “Boehner expected to allow vote on clean DHS bill as soon as Wednesday” CNN reports:
House Speaker John Boehner is expected to move soon — as early as Wednesday — to bring up the clean bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security for a vote on the House floor, according to two House GOP sources familiar with leadership discussions.
A clean bill to fully fund the Department through the end of the fiscal year is what Democrats have been demanding, and conservatives have been fighting against.
The plan is for a Republican member to bring up the Senate bill as a “privileged resolution,” which would mean it would get relatively quick vote on the House floor. Sources say leaders are still working out the timing, and who would offer the resolution to begin the process.
Although under House rules a Democrat could try to force this vote, these sources say it will be a House Republican who will move to proceed with the vote on the funding bill.
Conservatives have been demanding a conference committee with the House and Senate to work out the differences on the DHS spending bill. But on Monday, as expected, Senate Democrats voted to block any effort to set up a conference committee.
Boehner’s spokesman Michael Steel declined to address the next steps.
The Republican Speaker must believe that principled conservatives are just too stupid to see through this transparent political gimmick. Maybe Boehner and his cronies think that a “privileged resolution” will get him off the hook but a sellout is a sellout no matter what it’s called. Conservative website Breitbart.com is already all over it in the piece “Boehner Seeks to Dodge Blame for Coming DHS Funding Cave on Executive Amnesty” from which I excerpt the following:
House Speaker John Boehner is under fire on Capitol Hill, as Democrats are poised to take control of the House floor to fund President Barack Obama’s executive amnesty.
Even though Republicans have solid majorities in both chambers of Congress, a little known and seldom used House rule seems likely to become the vehicle through which a so-called “clean” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill—meaning one that would have no language blocking Obama’s executive amnesty—would pass the House of Representatives.
Now, Republicans in the House face yet another crucial deadline this week—but a series of chicanery-type votes and rules may help Congress fund all of DHS including Obama’s executive amnesty through the end of the fiscal year. But doing so could jeopardize Boehner’s speakership, as there’s definitely talk about yet another coup attempt against him should executive amnesty end up getting funded at the end of this process.
Washington is a town of sleaze, swine, scum-suckers and sellouts but Boehner’s “privileged resolution” gambit puts him right up there with Obama when it comes to such trickery. He brings to mind the classic H.L. Mencken quote of “imagine a gentleman and you will have imagined everything that he was not”.
It is going to be very interesting to see the reaction to Boehner’s dishonest maneuver and whether House conservatives have finally had enough of the teary, orange hued charlatan. While Boehner still has his share of establishment defenders, he is reaping the consequences of his extraordinary blunder of not sinking Obama’s amnesty for illegals instead of kicking the can down the road back in December.
