Motorists on Interstate 77 and State Route 8 near Akron, Ohio had front row seats to a bizarre show early Monday morning as a nude person of color led police on a foot chase that ended when he was smacked by a minivan.
From the “it’s one of the damndest things I’ve ever seen” desk, the incident began at roughly 5 am in the morning when police were contacted regarding a vehicle going the wrong way on I-77. Once the cops arrived and attempted to intervene. The man stopped the car and sprinted butt naked into the nearby woods.
Then the man who was identified as 23-year-old Jovon Dawson came out of the woods and sprinted down the northbound lanes of Route 8 while drivers watched the freak show play out in front of them and probably before many had even had their morning coffee.
According to the Cleveland Heights Patch, “Naked Man Hit By Car, Runs From Ohio Troopers”:
A naked University Heights man was hit by a car after running from Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers on Monday morning. The man is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries, the OSHP said.
Callers reported a wrong-way driver going south on I-77 at about 4:50 a.m. on Monday. Troopers rushed to the scene and located the car described by witnesses, a 2013 silver Kia Optima. The vehicle was being driven by Jovon Dawson, 23, of University Heights.
Troopers tried to stop the car, but Dawnson fled, the Highway Patrol said in a news release. Stop Sticks were deployed by the Stow Police Department and Dawson’s Kia was halted on State Route 8.
However, once the Optima was stopped, Dawson allegedly jumped out of his car ran into the woods. He then tried to cross Sullivan Road, according to Fox 8, before running, nude, down the northbound lanes of State Route 8.
Additional details per the Akron Beacon Journal:
He received nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital. The patrol said drug use is believed to be a factor in the incident.
Patrol Lt. A.L. Matos said Tuesday that troopers are consulting with the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office on possible charges.
The chase began around 4:50 a.m. when authorities started receiving calls about a wrong-way driver on I-77 in Green.
Troopers began pursuing Dawson, who they said was headed southbound in the northbound lanes, but quickly stopped for safety reasons.
“He was driving like there was no [meaning] to life,” Matos said.
Troopers lost sight of his 2013 Kia Optima. Later, the vehicle was spotted northbound on I-77 in the northbound lanes and headed onto Route 8.
Stow police deployed Stop Sticks to disable the car. When the vehicle stopped, Dawson hopped out and ran into the woods, later re-emerging about a quarter of a mile away, according to authorities.
He ran onto the highway and struck the side of the van, according to the highway patrol. Matos didn’t know how fast the van was traveling, but the speed limit there is 65 mph.
“The gentleman driving said he just saw a blur and didn’t see what ran into the side of his van,” Matos said.
Authorities suspect that the man may have been on drugs – ya think?
