The Resistance was scratching their pointy heads this morning after one of their most cherished voices did something that was unthinkable: Bill Maher defended Alex Jones’ right to free speech.
HBO’s smarmy host of the long-running “Real Time With Bill Maher” is normally one of the most hateful demagogues on late-night television but on rare occasions, he speaks out on issues that put him in the extreme minority on the radical left who must wonder whether he’s been smoking too much dope.
On Friday, Maher’s lack of enthusiasm to join the neo-Stalinist lynch mob that has been celebrating the unelected Grand Poobah’s of Silicon Valley being able to define what is acceptable speech and thought after they banned the bombastic Alex Jones from their platforms likely sent many members of The Resistance to bed thinking ugly thoughts about one of a man who has become one of the most vocal leaders of the post-Obama Democrats.
In a conversation with Never Trump radio personality Charlie Rose and some freak who looks like Jim Carey’s body double from “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” the host dared to utter the heretical concept that despite his loathing of the man, that even Alex Jones deserves the right to free speech.

Via The Hill, “Bill Maher criticizes social media bans: ‘Alex Jones gets to speak’”:
HBO talk-show host Bill Maher spoke out in defense of controversial right-wing host Alex Jones after Jones was suspended from several social media platforms, saying that everyone has a right to free speech.
Maher, noting that Jones has “told crazy lies” about him, said on his HBO show Friday that “if you’re a liberal, you’re supposed to be for free speech.”
“That’s free speech for the speech you hate. That’s what free speech means. We’re losing the thread of the concepts that are important to this country,” he continued.
“If you care about the real American shit or you don’t. And if you do, it goes for every side. I don’t like Alex Jones, but Alex Jones gets to speak. Everybody gets to speak,” Maher said.
Bear in mind that the “conservative” Charlie Sykes did everything in his power to prevent Trump from winning the nomination from his radio show in cheesehead nation and is now just another bitter clinger of the Never Trump rump movement that still exists which is a bit of background on why he is now parroting extreme-leftist talking points and calling for censorship. For his efforts, Sykes landed a job with arch-neocon Bill Kristol’s Weekly Standard which continues to be the megaphone of the Never Trumpers.
Oddly enough the crushing of free speech by the hate mob is something that Maher understands better than most.
It was back in 2001 he was banned from ABC’s “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher” for making controversial comments that were seen by many to be sympathetic to the 9/11 terrorists who crashed planes into the World Trade Center. It was stupid and dickish – consider the source – but it clearly left a scar on Maher and he has a perspective that many don’t.
As the old saying goes, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
