Yes, this move was certainly not unexpected, especially if you have been following the news recently. Not only has there been increasing pressure from Obama and the idiot liberals in Washington, DC to raise the national minimum wage, but the city of Seattle has also had its own movement for some time.
Now, this has become a reality as the city has voted to raise their minimum wage to $15 per hour. This law will be gradually phased in over the next seven years (this is at least less bad than having such a dramatic increase take effect immediately). By 2021 every business in the city will be required to comply with the ordinance. The mayor is expected to sign the bill into law later today.
This increase was proposed by Mayor Ed Murray, so there is little doubt about his intentions to sign it into law. Interestingly enough, Washington state already has the highest state-level minimum wage at $9.32 per hour.
Wonderful. Obama and his liberal elitist followers should all be whooping and cheering right about now. The unanimous nature of this ‘victory’ just proves how socialist the city council of Seattle has become. The sad fact of the matter is they have just really hurt their own citizens and this new rule is going to severely damage the business climate and overall economy in Seattle.
Teenagers who were already making the minimum wage are either going to get raises or they will be fired. Yes, we know this from experience. In fact, such a progressive experiment has been tried before in the same state! Listen to this IJReview report:
“At the start of the year, the Seattle suburb of SeaTac raised the area’s minimum wage to $15, and the consequences are now starting to be felt. And it’s not just the unions who championed the effort, or those who still have jobs that are feeling them. Over the last few months, a few things have happened:
–Managers have taken more responsibilities on themselves, instead of hiring more workers.
–Businesses have laid off workers, or eliminated their plans to hire more.
–Area parking now comes with an added ‘living-wage surcharge.’
–Hotels have cut employee benefits, free food, and overtime.
Shocking: when bad ideas are put into place, there are consequences.”
Of course, even basic economics tell us that these are typical results. And this is just the first stage. Later, more and more businesses will need to take cost cutting measure like those listed above. Employees who had benefits before can look forward to seeing them cut, or being asked to pay a portion of their package themselves. Don’t look for many employers to also pay for ObamaCare or other health insurance at the same time as employees are being paid at least $15 per hour.
This is what the city of Seattle has to look forward to. Hiring freezes, massive layoffs, added fees, and lost work hours. Thanks to the liberal, democratic, socialist agenda now being pushed by politicians like Obama and his cronies throughout all levels of government. Even the national news media is in on the act.
What do YOU think? Should we be raising the minimum wage? If so, what do you think will be the result? Is there any way that can help the economy rather than hinder growth?
