The Democrats, led by their indomitable leader and our amazing community organizer in chief Barack Obama, always push handouts as a way to restore economic activity and stimulate a recovery. In case any of you agree with this, there is newly released data that puts the lie to this notion
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), a record 20 percent of all American households were on food stamps in 2013. This is the highest level since the program began. There are also a record number of individual people enrolled in the food stamp program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP for short. According to the USDA there were 23,052,388 US households on the food stamp program during an average month in fiscal 2013. This represents an increase of nearly a million (722,675 to be exact) from fiscal 2012.
It is sad and alarming when we see numbers like this, and number keeps growing. It is also scary to think about how many real people this represents.Between 2006 and 2008 there were “only” 11 percent of US households enrolled in the food stamp program. But less than six years later, these numbers have almost doubled.
Hmmm…what else happened around this time? Yes, our amazing community organizer in chief took office in January 2009. Sure, Obama was quick to blame the global financial crisis for this huge run-up. However, it almost looks as if the SNAP program is deliberately being made into an entitlement program for the middle-class. This is no longer a safety net program, not when more than 23 million households enrolled.
So, is this the type of ‘recovery’ that Obama had in mind? It must be since he continues to brag about how well things are going. Since 2007 the cost of this program has doubled. This is not something which the limited resources of the government can continue funding.
This does not even consider the fraud and waste.. Examples of this are common and some have become legendary. Yet the government continues to do such a poor job of policing the program. That is part of the problem. Government agencies only survive by giving away money. The more money they give away, the more money they can ask for the following year. This expands their power, influence, and reach.
What do YOU think? Is it a coincidence that under Obama the number of households in the SNAP program has reached record levels? What should be done about this?
