Yes, I still understand that 2016 is a long time off. I even understand that about half of all voters are not even particularly concerned about the next presidential election right now. However, this is a very interesting story. It shows the arrogance of Hillary Clinton and her campaign team. Hopefully, this will become a bigger story itself and something that she is made to answer for.
Hillary Limits Press Access at Events
Hillary wants to run a more ‘intimate’ campaign that will involve the press having more limited access to her. Supposedly, she is doing this in order to avoid the impression of feeling overly entitled to voters’ support. So, she will be doing smaller events, one-on-one interactions, etc… But the real reason is likely to limit the number of reporters who will have direct access. This way, she might be able to get through the campaign without having to answer as many tough questions as would normally be expected.
This will also likely mean using reporting ‘pools’ in much the same manner as the Obama White House already does. More from MSNBC:
“Still, no one disputes that reporters will end up frustrated at times. Some events may be closed to the press, others may have access to only a select ‘pool’ of reporters who represent each type of outlet on behalf of their colleagues.
To offset perceptions that’s cutting off the press, Clinton may regularly take questions from reporters after events where some were denied access. Or she could prioritize local media and give a few minutes to the local TV affiliate or newspaper, like Obama did during the primary.
The format of the events could further inflame relations between the press and Clinton, which she acknowledged are ‘complicated,’ but pooling coverage may be the only way to satisfy all sides. After all, Clinton wants reporters to cover her small events as much as they want to cover them. If a touching connection is made with an Iowa voter and there’s no reporter around to Tweet it, does it make a sound?”
More Liberal Entitlement
To me, this simply sounds like more liberal arrogance and entitlement. She wants to limit press access so she isn’t faced with a barrage of legitimate, but difficult questions. Chances are, if she gets her way, any reporter who does ask her such a question will probably never get access again. This is much the same way that our amazing President Obama has been trying to play the press in recent times.
I suppose that’s liberal transparency for you. Of course, reporters might still try to crash some of Hillary’s events. Unfortunately for them, as a former First Lady and Secretary of State, she has a permanent contingent of Secret Service protection, so she might actually be able to enforce her will on this point. But, seeing as she has lost a lot of support over recent troubles, this might be her way of trying to protect against any future scandals and press reactions.
Of course, the Hillary campaign has already begun to schmooze those reporters who will have access. Chief of staff John Podesta has thrown private dinners for a number of hand picked campaign reporters.
What do YOU think about all of this? Is this ethical? Will it come back to haunt Hillary?
