It’s been almost a week since a lunatic assassinated two NYPD officers and only now are we hearing from the Pavolvian, knee-jerk crowd anxious to pin this on the NRA.
Thankfully, Dr. Peter Dreier has taken up the mantle in his false and ridiculous rant in the Huffington Post.
I have to admit I’m rather ashamed at my fellow college professors – especially ones who teach politics – when they tow any partisan line, blind to any sense of fairness or truth.
There are so many falsehoods in Dr. Dreier’s article, but the most glaring (and the one the gun-grabbers love to claim) is that the NRA wants all Americans to have “machine guns.”
In 2012, there were 32,288 deaths from firearm violence in the United States, including 11,622 homicides (32 a day) and 20,666 suicides. Firearms were used in 69.6 percent of all homicides that year. Of course, many more people are injured — some seriously and permanently — by gun violence.
The NRA has two knee-jerk responses to this. The first is that the Second Amendment gives all Americans the right to possess guns of all kinds — not just hunting rifles but machine guns and semi-automatics. Efforts to restrict gun sales and ownership is, according to the NRA, an assault on our constitutional freedoms.
First, “machine guns,” or fully-automatic firearms, are so strictly regulated that only collectors and other certain people have them. The NRA does NOT support all Americans owning a “machine gun.” Second, most hunting rifles are semi-automatic. Not knowing these two facts should instantly preclude anybody from making comments on the NRA or gun policy.
The rest of his article could be taken apart point-by-point, especially that gun crime is WAY down in the U.S. as firearm ownership is WAY up, but it’s been done before and trust me – college professors don’t listen to reason very often.
Interestingly, Peter Dreier is a “distinguished professor of politics” with a Ph.D. at Occidental College.
I teach politics as well in college. But I’m not “distinguished” nor do I have a Ph.D.
What I do have that Dr. Dreier lacks is the common sense to keep my fool mouth shut when I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about.
