Last Friday night on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the usually very liberal Bill Maher excoriated his intellectually lacking peers for their unwillingness to acknowledge and call out the atrocities committed against women (among others) by predominantly Islamic nations. Not surprisingly, his peers, aka the same people who constantly accuse all American men of being sexist oppressors, immediately fired back by listing a litany of reasons for why we should not castigate Islamic nations as sexist, misogynist and barbaric . . . because, you know, that’s “totally” unfair.
Take for instance RYOT contributor Brittany Greenquist, who compared women being unable to drive or being forced to endure genital mutation to the way in which women purportedly “make 77 cents for every dollar a man does.” The statistic she cited is patently false, but like, who cares!? Tee hee!
Then there’s Mic contributor Zak Cheney-Rice, who dismissed Islam’s wicked track record by pointing out that “very few countries have sterling records when it comes to gender equality.” Yes, of course, because first-world gender issues (e.g., the “need” for free birth control) rank right up there alongside honor killings.
Last but not least is Iranian-American religious scholar Reza Aslan, who tried arguing against Maher’s spot-on commentary by trotting out a few predominantly Islamic nations as examples of Islam practiced correctly:
“It certainly is [a free and open society for women] in Indonesia and Malaysia. It certainly is in Bangladesh. It certainly is in Turkey. I mean, again, this is the problem is that you’re talking about a religion of 1.5 billion people and certainly it becomes very easy to just simply paint them all with a single brush by saying, well, in Saudi Arabia, they can’t drive and so therefore that is somehow representative of Islam.”
Is that right?
Turkey suffers from gay honor killings, Indonesia permits the stoning of adulterers, Malaysia practices “widespread and institutionalised ethnic and religious unfair discrimination” and Bangladesh is known for female genital mutilation.
But sure, keep defending Islam on the basis that first-world nations like the United States somehow resemble Islamic nations because some of our businesses sell t-shirts that read, “Training To Be Batman’s Wife.” Or better yet, do like PoliticusUSA contributors Jason Easley and Sarah Jones and argue that President Obama should stop worrying about ISIS and instead focus on ‘dissing’ Republicans.
Yep. Leave it to liberals to once again defend the indefensible, even as they turn around and whine like petulant children about the most first-world of problems. Gee, maybe one day these liberals can experience this most perfect of system for themselves. How fun that shall be indeed!
